What Animals Can Be Used for Qurbani?

Qurbani is a sacred act of worship performed during Eid al‑Adha, honouring the devotion of Prophet Ibrahim (AS). To ensure your Qurbani is valid, it must be carried out using animals that meet the requirements set in Islamic teachings.

Many people ask: What animals can be used for Qurbani?

Here’s a simple guide.

Animals Allowed for Qurbani

Islam permits only certain livestock animals for Qurbani. These are:

  • Sheep
  • Goats
  • Cows
  • Bulls
  • Buffalo
  • Camels

These animals must be healthy, free from defects, and of the correct age:

  • Sheep/Goats: at least 1 year old
  • Cows/Bulls/Buffalo: at least 2 years old
  • Camels: at least 5 years old

Each sheep or goat counts as one Qurbani share, while cows, buffalo, and camels can be shared by up to seven people.

Why These Animals?

These specific animals were traditionally used by the Prophet ﷺ and the early Muslim community. They provide enough meat to feed families in need and fulfil the symbolic purpose of sacrifice, gratitude, and compassion.

Ensuring Your Qurbani Is Valid

To be accepted, the sacrifice must be:

  • Performed on the 10th, 11th, or 12th of Dhul Hijjah
  • Carried out according to Islamic guidelines
  • From an eligible animal of the correct age and condition

When you donate through a trusted charity, these requirements are taken care of on your behalf.
