What Animals Can Be Sacrificed for Qurbani?

Qurbani is a sacred act of worship performed during Eid al‑Adha, honouring the devotion and sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim (AS). To ensure your Qurbani is valid, it must be carried out using animals that meet the requirements set in Islamic teachings.

Many people ask: What animals can be sacrificed for Qurbani?

Here’s a simple guide.

Animals Allowed for Qurbani

Islam permits only specific livestock animals for Qurbani. These are:

  • Sheep
  • Goats
  • Cows
  • Bulls
  • Buffalo
  • Camels

These animals must be healthy, free from defects, and meet the minimum age requirements:

  • Sheep/Goats: at least 1 year old
  • Cows/Bulls/Buffalo: at least 2 years old
  • Camels: at least 5 years old

Each sheep or goat counts as one Qurbani, while cows, buffalo, and camels can be shared by up to seven people.

Why Only These Animals?

These animals were traditionally used by the Prophet ﷺ and the early Muslim community.

They provide enough meat to feed families in need and fulfil the symbolic purpose of sacrifice, gratitude, and compassion.

Their size, availability, and suitability make them the only animals permitted for Qurbani.

Ensuring Your Qurbani Is Valid

For your Qurbani to be accepted, it must be:

  • Performed on the 10th, 11th, or 12th of Dhul Hijjah
  • From an eligible animal of the correct age
  • Free from defects or illness
  • Carried out according to Islamic guidelines

When you donate through a trusted charity, these requirements are taken care of on your behalf.

Fulfil Your Qurbani With Save An Orphan

Save An Orphan ensures every Qurbani is:

  • Shariah‑compliant
  • Performed on the correct days
  • Delivered to families facing poverty and hardship

Your Qurbani provides fresh meat to families who rarely enjoy it at any other time of the year.

May Allah accept your sacrifice and bless every family who benefits from it.
