Find out more about the work we do and how we transform orphanages in the third world

The model orphanage

With your help we can take an unhealthy, depressing orphanage and turn it into a place of joy and hope.

Where there are orphanages which are most in need we will help with repairs and rebuilding to sufficiently accommodate the orphans.

We will also ensure that there is adequate shelter, good sanitation, clean drinking water and education, most importantly a play and learning zone where children can learn through play.

We will forge relations with local governments to provide effective healthcare. We will train the staff of the orphanage to provide first aid.

Facts & Figures from UNICEF

6000 children are orphaned every day

There are 143 million orphans in the world today – if a country had this population, it would become the 8th largest on earth.

Conflict has orphaned or separated over one million children from their families

From the Qur'an

As also concerning the children who are weak and oppressed: that ye stand firm for justice to orphans. There is not a good deed which ye do, but God is well-acquainted therewith." (4:127)

Save An Orphan will also implement adequate sanitation which may include new/repaired toilets, bathing areas/showers and waste disposal systems.

To combat the forming of diseases such as malaria we will train the staff and provide guttering to ensure stagnant water cannot gather. Regular health checks will be carried out by authorised doctors and trained medics to ensure that orphans will receive a good level of healthcare.

To this end, Save An Orphan aims to raise the standard of orphanages by creating a ‘model orphanage’ – where a set of standards are implemented throughout our projects.

It is hoped that consistency will bring the benefits of efficiency to staff and orphans alike.
